Madeira to head up Walmart’s e-commerce

June 10th, 2014

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Joel Anderson, chief executive officer of Walmart.com in the United States since 2011, is leaving the company on June 20 to become president of teen retailer Five Below Inc.

Anderson is to be replaced by Fernando Madeira, president and chief executive officer of Latin America at Walmart’s e-commerce arm.

Madeira will work to integrate the company’s Web sales with its brick-and-mortar stores.

Madeira, who has been based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, will relocate to San Bruno, Calif., where Walmart.com is headquartered.

E-commerce has been a growth area for Walmart. With $10 billion in annual sales, the company ranks as the nation’s fourth-largest e-commerce retailer, behind Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc. and Staples Inc., according to the Wall Street Journal.

Walmart has been experimenting with ways to incorporate e-commerce into its operations and give shoppers more options for ordering goods. The company recently announced plans for a prototype program to allow shoppers who order groceries from Walmart’s website to drive to a pickup center and collect the food without leaving their vehicles.
