BEDFORD, N.H. — Hannaford Supermarkets has debuted a concept store here with added amenities.

hannafordThe replacement outlet features ready-to-eat meals that can be taken out or eaten in the store, as well as fruits and vegetables cut to order. There are also more than 230 craft beers and a deep selection of wines.

The supermarket will be a learning laboratory, according to a Hannaford spokesman. “This will really inform the design and remodels of large Hannaford stores in the future,” he told the New Hampshire Union Leader.

At 68,000 square feet, the store in Bedford, just outside Manchester, will be Hannaford’s largest in the Granite State. The chain’s biggest store, at 71,000 square feet, is in Portland, Maine.

The new Hannaford outlet is less than a half-mile from a Whole Foods Market Inc. unit, a 43,000-square-foot store that debuted in April. Other new stores in the Manchester area include a Walmart Supercenter and an Aldi outlet.

Hannaford also this spring opened its 36th supermarket in New Hampshire, in Bristol. The 20,000-square-foot store had been a Shop ’n Save outlet.

“We are excited to become part of the Bristol community, with the same great associates that were working at the store previously,” said store manager Larry Poliquin, a longtime resident of the region. “Hannaford is committed to partnering with local organizations and schools, and to working with local farmers as well, to help the Bristol area thrive.”

Last month, the chain announced that it will shutter its location in Hudson, Mass., near Worcester, in August.

The company decided to focus on nearby stores instead of renewing the store’s multiyear lease, said the spokesman.

Scarborough, Maine-based Hannaford operates 189 stores in the Northeast. Stores are located in Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, and employ more than 27,000 associates.
