Activist investor Nelson Peltz has amassed a 6%-plus stake in Family Dollar Stores Inc. and is pushing the retailer to make changes he feels will increase shareholder value.
The company has responded by pointing out that it achieved sustained high earnings growth and seen its stock price escalate more than 40% during the course of this year.

Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. has completed the installation of solar panels on eight stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey. The project is part of the grocer’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% between 2008 and 2015. Dollar General Corp. will open its 9,000th store Saturday in Fountain Run, Ken., returning to the state in which it began operations in 1955. Giant Eagle Inc. has begun offering five common prescription drugs for type 2 diabetes free to customers in its northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania market areas. Two new forecasts take somewhat different views of how the back-to-school season may fare this year. Milwaukee-based Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc. has made its Illinois debut in this Chicago suburb with a new banner, Mariano’s Fresh Market. As part of its ongoing efforts to promote health and wellness, Wegmans Food Markets has created what it calls "eat well, live well stations" that display a selection of fresh, nutritious foods near the pharmacy area of its supermarkets.

Procter & Gamble Co. is inserting coupons from several of its brands inside specially marked products. British food retailer J. Sainsbury PLC is installing kiosks made by Asteres Inc. at its stores that let shoppers pick up and drop off prescriptions without waiting in a line, and even when the pharmacy is closed. As part of its overall health and wellness push, Kraft Foods plans to boost the whole grain content in its venerable Nabisco cracker brands, more than doubling the amount of whole grain currently used across the product portfolio. Seventh Generation, a maker of nontoxic and environmentally friendly household products, is slated to begin offering a selection of its products at more than 1,500 Walmart stores and on Walmart.com.
