When Rick Dreiling arrived at Dollar General Corp. at the beginning of 2008 the retailer had reached a watershed. The retail business has been the main engine driving sales and profitability growth at CVS Caremark Corp., and much of the credit for its success belongs to the merchandising team led by Mike Bloom, executive vice president of merchandising and supply chain. Mike Bloom, CVS’ executive vice president of merchandising and supply chain, is responsible for some $18 billion in sales at America’s largest health care retailer, an offering at once creative and sprawling in its range and tightly focused on the retailer’s core health and beauty categories. Members of Mike Bloom’s diverse merchandising team at CVS/pharmacy include experts in particular categories, analysis, store design, logistics and inventory. Thirty-seven years ago, a young woman in Portland, Ore., who couldn’t find a full-time job in the career she had chosen, that of a French teacher, decided to make a change. ECRM founder and chief executive officer Charlie Bowlus has been named MMR’s Industry Innovator of the Year for 2010. The holiday selling season that ended two weeks ago was a particularly gratifying experience — for those retailers that sold food, catered to high-end shoppers or sold much of their merchandise online. BJ’s Wholesale Club Inc. has shaken up management and unveiled plans to restructure its home office and some field operations plus close five underperforming stores by the end of this month. Sears Holdings Corp. has promoted Deidra Cheeks Merriwether to senior vice president and president of its Retail Services unit. A&P has filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the bankruptcy code in an effort to carry out further financial and operational restructuring.
