After posting disappointing sales in the fourth quarter of 2011, Delhaize America has decided to close more than 100 stores and reshuffle its banners in the Southeast. Dollar General Corp. will debut 625 stores and add more than 6,000 jobs in 2012. The outlets will be spread among the retailer’s 40-state operating area. Sears Holdings Corp. has tapped former Brookstone Inc. head Ron Boire to serve as its executive vice president and chief merchandising officer. Boire will also serve as president of the company’s Sears and Kmart chains. While December sales were hurt by high temperatures, mass retailers still performed better last year than in 2010. In the latest demonstration of its merchandising flair and ability to differentiate itself, Target Corp. will offer limited-edition merchandise from independent specialty stores beginning in May. Supervalu Inc. lowered its sales and profit guidance for fiscal 2012 after reporting another drop in sales and a net loss prompted by a big noncash impairment charge. Giant Food Stores LLC, a division of Ahold USA, has agreed to acquire 16 Genuardi’s locations in the greater Philadelphia area from Safeway Inc. for $106 million. Tens of thousands of pharmacy patients took advantage of Walgreen Co.’s January promotion of its Prescription Savings Club (PSC) in the first days of the new year.
