Walmart has made several changes in senior management, including a new chief executive officer for Sam’s Club and a new president and CEO for Walmart’s e-commerce business. Walmart has redrawn the lines of responsibility in its U.S. stores division in a bid to improve coordination between its merchandising and marketing functions. Jim Sinegal, the cofounder of Costco Wholesale Corp., who turned 76 on January 1, has relinquished his role as chief executive officer after a 28-year career as head of a retailer that has succeeded beyond his, or anyone’s, dreams. J.C. Penney Co.’s new executive team last month laid out its plans for the company’s transition into what they feel will be “America’s favorite store.” H-E-B has begun major campaigns to hone its value proposition and identity as a healthy food destination. Discount grocer Bottom Dollar Food has officially opened the doors for its first stores in Ohio and metropolitan Pittsburgh. Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. chairman, president and chief executive officer Peter Lynch will step down from those positions later this year. Admitting considerable variation in theory and practice, capitalism is anything but monolithic. One strain of the discipline was examined at the National Retail Federation’s Big Show here last month during a super session called Conscious Capitalism.
