While some economists have declared the recession over, discount retailers that have benefited from the downturn are wagering that consumers will continue to make price their highest priority for this year. Walmart and Target Corp. are becoming increasingly similar as the former improves its merchandising prowess and the latter sharpens its pricing, a new report contends. Just days after the Ontario health minister unveiled plans to halve the reimbursement rate for prescriptions filled with generic drugs, the two largest chains in the province altered their operations to deal with the expected loss in revenue. Ahold USA is planning a reorganization of its retail merchandising and marketing operations, according to published reports. Food Lion LLC has debuted a new television advertising campaign, highlighting reduced prices on thousands of its best-selling items. Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market reached and then quickly passed the 150-store mark earlier this month. Andy Bond, president and chief executive officer of Asda PLC, will give up the position to become chairman of the retailer’s executive committee, a part-time role.
