Big tech initiative launched at GMDC show

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Global Market Development Center (GMDC) concluded its 42nd annual GMDC General Merchandise Conference here earlier this month.

Highlights of the event included the unveiling of a major initiative, GMDC-Connect, which will enhance member connectivity and productivity going forward.

GMDC-Connect utilizes telepresence technology that was piloted at the conference. Using high-definition video and broadband telecommunications, it enables supplier attendees to meet virtually with retail buyers and executives not able to attend.

GMDC president and chief executive officer Dave McConnell also announced the creation of the President’s Innovation Network (PIN), a group that will be responsible for driving continued innovation by GMDC.

The agenda of the conference included a business session and retailer panel discussion of the latest research conducted for GMDC by Nielsen Co. and Radian Group, a consulting firm. "The industry insights and information shared is just the beginning of what GMDC, Nielsen and Radian will be providing in the future," said Althea Jones, senior vice president of store operations at BI-LO LLC.

Another highlight was the Lifetime Achievement Award given to Jerry Brown, who retired as vice president of industry and customer development for Unilever last December.
