Walmart, whose core shoppers are being hit particularly hard by the stagnant economy and rising gasoline prices, faces new headwinds in its efforts to boost same-store sales in the United States. Charlie Bowlus, founder and chief executive officer of ECRM, has died unexpectedly. He was 64. Kroger Co. has promoted Donna Giordano to president of its Ralphs division. Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. has reopened two of its stores, located in Apopka and St. Johns, Fla., after performing what the company terms transformational remodels on them. Retail sales were mixed in July, with some chains posting stronger than expected same-store increases (albeit against weak prior-year numbers) while others lagged. Jeff Strong has decided to leave his position as global chief customer officer of Johnson & Johnson (J&J), effective August 23.
