Disappointing second quarter results at its Food Lion operations have prompted Delhaize Group to lower its full-year profit projection and scale back its store expansion plans. Retailers generally posted lackluster same-store sales increases in July, as continued worries about the economy caused many consumers to put the brakes on discretionary spending. Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. will close 30 underperforming stores and consolidate its four operating regions into three. The company also reaffirmed its earnings guidance for fiscal 2010 despite what it described as a deteriorating sales environment. Walgreen Co. is attempting to alleviate the problem of Chicago’s food deserts by revamping stores to offer expanded food assortments. Whole Foods Market Inc. has unveiled aggressive expansion plans for 2011 and 2012. Target Corp. and RadioShack Corp. are rolling out a wireless electronics kiosk program after testing the initiative in 100 Target outlets. Supervalu Inc. has named Larry Wahlstrom president of Shaw’s Supermarkets after a one-year retirement.
