CVS Caremark Corp. has enlisted a retail operations veteran to head the nation’s second-largest drug store business. Every day seems to bring another report of plunging consumer confidence, the spectre of a double-dip recession is looming, and the financial markets continue to fluctuate almost hysterically. Meijer Inc. has unveiled its newest store concept, Meijer Marketplace, in this Chicago suburb. At 90,000 square feet, the outlet represents a smaller version of the Meijer supercenter, which typically measures nearly 200,000 square feet. Kmart turned in a flat sales performance for the second quarter. Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. has decided to pull the plug on SaveRite, its discount grocery format, and convert the six stores in two states to the Winn-Dixie name. The Global Market Development Center (GMDC) enjoys a unique position as the sole trade association that is entirely focused on fostering the general merchandise and health, beauty and wellness businesses of its members. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Network of Executive Women (NEW), and the group is celebrating the milestone with a host of activities designed to advance women and diversity in the consumer products and retail industries while raising awareness of NEW.
