As the back-to-school season entered its final weeks, a gloomy economic landscape cast shadows over this important harbinger of holiday sales. Five Target stores in the Denver area and eight of the retailer’s outlets in the Tampa, Fla., market have been redesigned to further deliver one-stop shopping convenience for guests. Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has unveiled plans to open eight stores in Northern California early next year. Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. has asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by A&P over comparative pricing in advertising. Regional grocer Marsh Supermarkets is apparently no longer for sale. A&P president and chief executive officer Sam Martin, who was named to his post in July, has begun assembling a new management team. Dollar General Corp. has revamped its bobbie brooks women’s apparel line, and is relying on its employees to show off the new looks to consumers. Duane Reade’s DR Delish line of premium snacks and beverages, which has proven a hit in its New York City stores, is going nationwide.
