Walmart’s international business is thriving and growing faster than any other part of the giant retailer’s operations. Jim Sinegal will step down as chief executive officer of Costco Wholesale Corp. at the end of the year. He will be succeeded by president and COO Craig Jelinek. Kroger Co. has promoted Joe Fey to president of its Quality Food Centers (QFC) division. Schnuck Markets Inc. is exiting the Memphis market, selling nine grocery stores and eight gas stations to Kroger. A new survey by Alix Partners LLP sheds considerable light on the current state of mind of American grocery shoppers. Costco Wholesale Corp. has opened its second and third Australian stores in the midst of the country’s worst retail downturn for more than 10 years. Duckwall-ALCO Stores Inc., a regional discounter that has mainly focused on small towns in the Midwest, plans to try opening urban stores. Supervalu Inc. says it will sell 107 fuel centers across the western half of the country to four separate companies.
