Despite continuing uncertainty over the economy and a tight presidential election race, the retail industry is looking for a modest increase in holiday sales this year. Rite Aid unveiled the latest iteration of its wellness store format with the grand reopening of a remodeled store here. Retail sales growth decelerated in September, but not enough to dampen hopes for a solid holiday season. Walmart has launched a program to encourage healthier eating habits in partnership with Humana Vitality, a subsidiary of health insurer Humana. Kroger Co. has expanded its private label offering with the Simple Truth and Simple Truth Organic brands. Dollar General Corp.’s bottom line got help from lower debt repurchase costs and tax adjustments during the second quarter, but sales, operating profit and adjusted earnings all escalated at a double-digit pace, and management raised its full-year earnings guidance as a result.
