Stater Bros. earns green award

January 4th, 2012

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Stater Bros. Markets has received a Waste Reduction Award from the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery Waste Reduction Awards Program for the second year in a row.

The regional supermarket chain eliminated 125.8 million pounds of waste from landfills last year as a result of several green programs. More than 70 million pounds of cardboard were recycled, while its green waste composting program eliminated nearly 40 million pounds of waste.

It donated more than 3 million pounds of food to local food banks, recycled more than 8 million pounds of sustainable rendering products and recycled over 2.7 million pounds of plastic bags.

The company also participates in the state’s Voluntary Demand Response Program to reduce energy consumption at store level when demand is high.
