Ahold USA brand earns certification

CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold USA’s Nature’s Promise chunk light canned tuna (skipjack) and Nature’s Promise solid white canned tuna (albacore) have been certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the company says. Nature’s Promise canned tuna is sold at Ahold USA’s Stop & Shop New England, Stop & Shop New York Metro, Giant Landover and Giant Carlisle retail divisions, and via the online grocer Peapod.

“Ahold USA is committed to supporting the responsible retailing objectives of its retail divisions, which include lessening our environmental impact and helping customers eat well with quality, sustainable products,” says Marissa Nelson, senior vice president of responsible retailing and healthy living at Ahold.

MSC certification is given to seafood from fisheries that meet the council’s strict standard for sustainability and ensure that fish are caught at levels that allow fish populations and the ecosystems on which they depend to remain healthy and productive for the future. Nature’s Promise canned tuna is caught using a “one-by-one” method, one line to catch one fish at a time, which is considered the most sustainable fishing method.

“Earning MSC certification for our Nature’s Promise solid white and chunk light canned tuna illustrates our commitment to promoting sustainability among our own brand products,” said Juan De Paoli, Ahold’s senior vice president brand management and own brands. “Nature’s Promise canned tuna is also 100% traceable to the harvest vessel where the fish was caught.”

Earlier this year, Ahold USA announced that all seafood sold from the service counters at its retail divisions are 100% sustainably and responsibly sourced, as are its Nature’s Promise and own brand seafood products.
