NEW YORK — Both Aldi and Lidl continue to expand their retail presence on Long Island.

Aldi announced plans to open two new stores, in Valley Stream and North Babylon, N.Y., in the first half of 2020. The hard discount grocer noted that the Valley Stream store, which is opening on February 27, will be its first location in Nassau County. No opening date was announced for the North Babylon store.

With these additions, Aldi will have 15 stores in New York City and Long Island. The company said the two planned stores will mark its first new Long Island locations since 2016.

Rival discount grocer Lidl is also accelerating its growth in the region. In December, Lidl opened four Long Island stores, in Plainview, Huntington Station, West Babylon and Center Moriches. Another four stores are expected to open by the summer, in East Meadow, Lake Grove, Oakdale and Patchogue.
