LONG BEACH, Calif. – Amazon opened its newest Amazon Fresh grocery store here today, its eighth in Southern California and the 12th in the United States.

The newest entry, which occupies a former Haggen grocery store, features the Dash Carts that use an array of sensors and cameras to log what’s put into the basket and allow shoppers to skip the checkout line. The new store also lets shoppers use a conventional shopping cart and cashier.

Amazon earlier this month celebrated the opening of its first physical store outside of the U.S., with the launch of an Amazon Fresh store in London.

“The Amazon Fresh store will offer customers everything they’d want from their local neighborhood grocery store with an experience that allows shoppers to simply take what they want and just walk out,” Amazon said in a statement.

The company, which opened its first Amazon Fresh grocery store in August in Woodland Hills, Calif., has plans in the works for additional Fresh stores, in metro areas including Philadelphia, Seattle and Sacramento, Calif.

Amazon owns and operates about 500 Whole Foods Market grocery stores in the U.S. as well as more than two dozen Amazon Go convenience stores spread across Seattle, New York, Chicago and San Francisco. It also has two Go Grocery locations, in Seattle and Redmond, Wash.

In its most-recent quarter, Amazon posted revenue from its physical stores, which includes Whole Foods and Amazon Go stores, of $4 billion, down 7% from a year earlier.
