Ahold USA is planning a reorganization of its retail merchandising and marketing operations, according to published reports.

Ahold intends to base all of its nonperishable and fresh merchandising functions in Carlisle, Pa., where its Giant-Carlisle supermarket chain is based.

Some of those functions had previously been handled at the Quincy, Mass., headquarters of its Stop & Shop chain, the Boston Herald reported.

Running that business entirely from Carlisle, in the geographic center of Ahold’s U.S. operations, would offer improved accessibility between suppliers and merchandisers, the company said.

The reorganization of Ahold USA’s structure is expected to be completed by the year’s end.

At its annual meeting, parent company Ahold NV noted that both the Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover chains saw gains in market share, margins and same-store sales. Margins fell at Giant-Carlisle, but sales improved.
