GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General Corp. is slated to create 6,000 new jobs with its plan to open 625 new stores during its 2011 fiscal year.

Dollar General Corp. is slated to create 6,000 new jobs with its plan to open 625 new stores during its 2011 fiscal year.

The deep discount retailer said Monday that the new stores and jobs will be spread among its current 35-state operating area as well as three new states: Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire.

In addition to 625 new stores, Dollar General plans to remodel or relocate 550 stores.

"Bringing our store model of convenience and value to more people in more states is an exciting opportunity for us," Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "We believe the new communities and states we are entering will benefit from the new jobs, shopping choices and dedication to community found at Dollar General."

Dollar General explained that it will bring thousands of new jobs to local communities by expanding its presence in new suburban, rural and metropolitan markets. The company noted that the new jobs follow two years of positive job growth. From 2009 to 2011, the retailer will have created more than 15,000 new jobs.

Last month, during a conference call with analysts on Dollar General’s third-quarter results, Dreiling said the retailer aims to revitalize and expand its DG Market format, a test concept that was unveiled in 2003 but was put on hold in 2007 as the chain’s new management focused on its core stores.

Overall, Dollar General operates more than 9,200 stores.
