GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General Corp. is providing supplies to flood victims in Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee through merchandise donations to the American Red Cross.

The deep discount retailer said late Monday that it’s donating a variety of supplies to the Red Cross, such as personal hygiene products, socks, underwear, diapers and other baby products.

The company, which has more than 8,800 stores in 35 states, also is donating cleaning supplies to Second Harvest Food Bank.

"Dollar General is dedicated to helping our friends and neighbors recover from this disaster," chairman and chief executive officer Rick Dreiling said in a statement. "These much-needed supplies will aid flood victims as they work to rebuild their lives. Our thoughts are with those who have been affected, and we are committed to helping these communities recover quickly."

In addition, Dollar General is encouraging customers and employees who want to join the recovery effort to donate to the American Red Cross through www.redcross.org and at the checkout registers at its stores in Mississippi, Kentucky and Tennessee. The retailer, too, said it’s supporting employees who have been affected by the disaster through its Employee Assistance Fund.

The severe flooding resulted from weekend storms that dumped recording-breaking levels of rain on the region, swelling lakes, rivers, streams and drainage systems well over capacity and catching many residents by surprise. Tornadoes also hit some areas. Several dozen deaths are attributed to the disaster.
