E-commerce and delivery hardly static

The ways that people can shop for products and get them home are multiplying so fast that hardly anyone involved in the process can keep up.

That was one of the takeaways from a virtual panel discussion on the future of same-day delivery at the National Retail Federation’s recent Retail Converge conference. Kelly Caruso, the chief executive officer of Shipt, and Jeff Pilof, senior vice president of supply chain at CVS Health, talked about the ways their companies work together to get CVS products to customers’ homes.

That can actually happen a couple of ways. In some cases a CVS employee will pick and pack the items, and a Shipt employee will deliver them. In other cases the Shipt employee will come into the CVS store on behalf of the customer, pick out the items and handle the delivery too.

“If I think about our relationship with CVS … we offer a couple of different products in a couple of different ways, and what it really comes down to is both of us meeting the CVS customer where they are in a way that they want to shop and have their e-commerce orders fulfilled for them with a foundation of strong customer experience,” Caruso said.

Pilof also cited the importance of the partnership, but he acknowledged that CVS is working with other companies too. About a year ago CVS was the first retail pharmacy to deliver a prescription drug to a customer’s home using a drone, he said, and the company is involved in a number of pilot programs with different companies working on various autonomous delivery models. But while someone getting a pizza delivered might be happy to go out and get it from the delivery vehicle themselves, an elderly patient getting a prescription delivered would require a different level of service.

The upshot is that for any given retailer there will likely be a whole range of delivery options, depending on the customer and the type of item being purchased.

The challenge for retailers will be to hide the complexity and make the process simple, affordable and seamless for shoppers. What’s also clear is that this is what the future will require.
