LOS ANGELES — Kroger Co.’s Ralphs Grocery, Safeway Inc.’s Vons and Supervalu Inc.’s Albertsons supermarket chains have reached a tentative contract agreement with United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) members in Southern California, avoiding a labor stoppage.

Kroger Co.’s Ralphs Grocery, Safeway Inc.’s Vons and Supervalu Inc.’s Albertsons supermarket chains have reached a tentative contract agreement with United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) members in Southern California, avoiding a labor stoppage.

The accord, at presstime pending ratification by workers, came after eight months of talks for a new collective bargaining agreement to replace the previous pact, which expired in March. In mid-September a strike had loomed after UFCW, citing “stonewalling” by the retailers, issued a 72-hour notice to cancel its contract extension.

The new contract will cover 62,000 UFCW grocery workers, the union’s largest bargaining unit. Another 28,000 grocery workers at such regional chains as Stater Brothers, Food 4 Less, Gelson’s Market and others are covered by the successful resolution of the Southern California contract, according to UFCW.
