WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Hy-Vee Inc. on Monday released details about its planned expansion into Tennessee, revealing that its first store in the state will be located in the city of Spring Hill.

Hy-Vee logoLocated in central Tennessee, the city is approximately 35 miles south of Nashville in Williamson and Maury counties. Hy-Vee says it has secured 17 acres there, at the corner of Buckner Lane and June Lake Boulevard within the new June Lake gateway development. The retailer has submitted initial plans to the city calling for an approximately 160,000-square-foot store that is tentatively scheduled to open in 2023.

“As Hy-Vee continues to grow and evolve, we have so much to offer consumers across the U.S. that we knew it was time to expand our footprint even further,” Hy-Vee chairman and CEO Randy Edeker said. “As customers’ shopping habits change and their needs evolve, we have services and offerings that we believe will bring an entirely new retail experience to those in Tennessee.”

Hy-Vee currently operates more than 285 stores in eight Midwestern states: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The company last expanded its operating territory to include a new state in 2009, when it moved into Wisconsin. But in December the regional grocery chain revealed plans to expand its territory to the south and east, moving into four new states with more than 20 new stores by 2025. The retailer has since announced its first store locations in Indiana and Kentucky, and now Tennessee. The fourth state is Alabama.

Spring Hill Mayor Jim Hagaman complimented Hy-Vee for choosing his city for its first Tennessee store.

“Having surpassed 50,000 in population, our city continues to be a favored destination for additional specialty and high-end firms,” Hagaman said. “Our residents are in the drivers’ seat and like doing business locally.”

Don Alexander, project manager for the new June Lake gateway development in Spring Hill, also welcomed the retailer’s planned expansion into the market. “We are excited that Hy-Vee has chosen June Lake as part of their expansion plan into Tennessee,” he said. “Hy-Vee has a great reputation and fulfills a key component of the overall vision for the community.”
