GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer Inc. will spend more than $160 million this year to remodel and open stores.

Meijer Inc. will spend more than $160 million this year to remodel and open stores.

Executives say the investment includes the construction of six new supercenters (two each in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois) and the remodeling of four stores in Michigan and one in Illinois.

Executives say that one of the remodels — in the Knapp’s Corners area of Grand Rapids — will test design elements that may be considered for future stores.

"We are pleased to continue to invest in the Midwest communities that have supported us for so long," cochairman and co-chief executive officer Hank Meijer says. "We will continue our process of slow, steady growth that has allowed us to focus on our customers and team members, while supporting the communities where they work and live."

Since 2007 Meijer has opened 29 new stores, he says, and remodeled dozens of other units across the Midwest.
