OSAKA, Japan and MIAMI — Target Corp. plans to open eight new Target Clinic locations in early September.

The discount store chain said Wednesday that the expansion includes five new health clinics at Target stores in Chicago and three in Palm Beach, Fla.-area Target stores.

Construction is under way at three of the Chicago stores, and early this month work is set to begin at the two other Chicago locations as well as at the three Palm Beach stores, according to the company. Target said it’s now hiring staff for the in-store clinics, including nurse practitioners.

The Target Clinics offer on-the-spot treatment for minor illnesses and injuries as well as skin treatments, vaccinations, and a variety of health tests and screenings, all of which are administered by nurse practitioners. Other basic health care services include prevention and treatment of seasonal allergies, camp and sports physicals for children, and flu shots. Target Clinic nurse practitioners can test and treat patients from ages 18 months and up.

Target, which introduced Target Clinic in 2006, currently operates 28 retail clinics in Minnesota and Maryland. The discount chain has 1,740 stores in 49 states.
