Paperless coupons honored by Walgreens

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens, the biggest component of Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc., has added new features to its paperless coupon program, which first appeared in 2014. The company also announced that since the program’s debut more than 135 million coupons from Walgreens and manufacturers have been virtually “clipped” and there has been a continual increase in monthly redemptions.

Customers now are able to redeem paperless coupons and apply them to online purchases in addition to their in-store transactions. Moreover, offers can be “clipped” on product detail pages and in search results on the Walgreens.com website or through the Walgreens mobile app. As a result, customers can find and redeem the latest promotions and offers faster and more easily.

“In the last few years, we’ve seen a growing demand from our customers to provide value and a seamless shopping experience, whether they visit us in-store, online or through the Walgreens mobile app,” says Linda Filler, president of retail products and chief merchandising officer for Walgreens.

“Paperless coupons give Walgreens and our vendor partners an opportunity to deliver even greater value to our customers no matter which of our channels they choose to shop.”

The paperless, or electronic, coupons are available to the 85 million-plus active members of Walgreens’ Balance Rewards loyalty program.

By using either the Walgreens.com/coupons website or the Walgreens mobile app, members can search and redeem offers from Walgreens and the retailer’s suppliers in a wide variety of categories. When members “clip” offers, they are automatically saved to their Balance Rewards card accounts.

“We were one of the first retailers to take an innovative and simplified approach in developing the customer experience for digital coupons,” says Abhi Dhar, senior vice president and chief information officer at Walgreens. “These latest enhancements, in addition to integrating our loyalty program with Apple Pay and Android Pay, have made it even easier for the millions of people who use our online and mobile channels every day to save even more at Walgreens.”

Since its launch in 2014, Walgreens has continued to enhance and simplify the paperless coupon program. Through a partnership with Quotient (formerly Coupons.com Inc.) the drug store chain offers manufacturers’ coupons as well as its own.

Later this summer, Walgreens plans to offer digital redemption and clippings from the product pages of its weekly ad and monthly savings book in order to provide customers with even more savings opportunities.
