Raley’s set to pilot natural format

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Raley’s recently announced that it plans to test a new natural foods supermarket concept in downtown Sacramento. The 11,000-square-foot store will feature a curated selection of product designed to encourage wholesome eating, according to the company, with an emphasis on products that are minimally processed, organic (when available), sustainably sourced and free of elements that are not found in nature.

“I want to go back to the basics and create a store that is reminiscent of a neighborhood corner market but with a focus on nutritious food at a fair value,” stated Michael Teel, Raley‘s president and chief executive officer. “Market 5-ONE-5 will be an unpretentious, inclusive and straightforward shopping ­experience.”

Along with the goal “of building awareness about where food comes from,” Market 5-ONE-5, Raley’s said, embraces the notion that food affects health. This new specialty grocery store is conceptualized from a farmer’s market with fresh products delivered daily.

The plans call for the new store to be operated independently from the Raley’s chain, according to a report in the Sacramento Bee. A website for the planned store says the name — Market 5-ONE-5 — reflects the values behind the project. The first “5” in the name is for the five senses, and the second “5” is for the five essential “building blocks of food,” which are “carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals, and water.” The acronym at the center of the name stands for organic, nutrition and education (ONE).

Located in Sacramento’s R Street district, Market 5-ONE-5 will cater to local food lovers by offering a convenient shopping experience, an interesting place to socialize, and seasonally prepared cuisine, the company said.
