Retail Business Services to launch ScanIt Mobile technology

QUINCY, MASS. – Retail Business Services, a subsidiary of Ahold Delhaize USA, on Thursday said implementation of its ScanIt Mobile solution for frictionless checkout is on track to reach 30 grocery stores by year’s end.

The ScanIt Mobile technology was developed in Retail Business Services’ innovation lab and tech hub and is now in use at some of Ahold Delhaize USA’s Stop & Shop and GIANT/MARTIN’S outlets.

The technology provides users with two shopping options:

  • Customers with a smartphone can use the ScanIt Mobile application loaded with a wallet and payment option to scan product bar codes. Once the shopper’s basket is filled, he or she exits the store through a designated checkout lane and a “payment approved” message appears, signifying that the customer has been charged for the merchandise.
  • Customers can pick up a handheld ScanIt Mobile device as they enter the store and use its scanning device to shop. At the end of the shopping session, the customer transfers data to a smartphone for frictionless checkout through a designated checkout lane.

The company said that services including PayPal, Venmo, Apply Pay and Google Pay are also integrated into the wallet, enabling the customer to link information from these payment platforms.

Retail Business Services said it expects to expand the program in 2020 and beyond, and to continue to develop additional frictionless technologies and formats.

“At Retail Business Services, we’re focused on creating the next generation of grocery retail,” said Paul Scorza, executive vice president, Information Technology and the chief information officer for Retail Business Services. “A key part of this is developing new technologies that support consumers’ changing preferences for how they want to shop. For consumers who want to skip the checkout line and pay with their smartphones, we’re excited to see the use of our in-store frictionless solution continue to grow. At the same time, we continue to evaluate ways to open up new possibilities for the future.”
