MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu Inc. has unveiled a plan to reduce its national workforce by an estimated 800 positions.

Executives say most of the reductions will be made by the close of Supervalu’s fiscal year on February 25. The jobs trimmed will include current positions and open jobs that will not be filled.

"These reductions are necessary to help further strengthen and accelerate Supervalu’s business turnaround in a very competitive marketplace," president and chief executive officer Craig Herkert says about the move, which he describes as another step in Supervalu’s effort to trim expenses and reduce operating costs in order to help the company deliver more competitive pricing to its customers.

"These changes will allow us to better connect with customers and put more authority in the hands of people who interact more closely with our customers," he says.
