Representatives of Target met with Canadian developers at a shopping center trade show in Toronto this month.

The discount store chain could hit the 200-store mark north of the border within 10 years, Fred Waks, chief operating officer at RioCan, the largest public real estate developer in Canada, told the Winnipeg Free Press.

RioCan chief financial officer Rags Davloor said Target is looking to enter the country with six to 10 stores in late 2014 or the following year.

A Target spokeswoman said this month that the retailer is optimistic about debuting its first Canadian stores by the middle of the decade.

Walmart entered the country with its 1994 acquisition of the 122-unit Woolco Canada chain and now has 321 Canadian stores.
