App upgrades will allow shoppers to initiate product returns and order a Starbucks coffee

MINNEAPOLIS – Target Corp. this week revealed plans for upgrading its curbside pickup service – including merchandise returns and the opportunity to pick up a Starbucks coffee — at select locations, starting in the fall.

The company also will introduce “backup item” functionality to additional product categories, adding beauty and household essentials to a feature that lets shoppers designate secondary backup items for their Drive Up and Order Pickup orders, in the event their first-choice items are unavailable.Target holiday

In shopper surveys, the ability to place a pickup order for a Starbucks product was a top request, according to the company. Target is tweaking its app to give shoppers the option of placing a Starbucks order when using the app to indicate they are “on their way” to the pickup location.

Similarly, shoppers will be able to use the app to initiate the return process, which can be completed at the pickup site.

“Our guests continue to tell us they love the ease and convenience of Drive Up, and they have been asking us to add even more of the Target experience to the service,” said Mark Schindele, Target’s chief stores officer.

The moves are the latest efforts by Target to upgrade its same-day services. In recent months the company introduced adult beverage pickup, a feature called “shopping partner” that lets buyers send someone else to pick up the merchandise, and a “forget something” feature that lets an online shopper add one or more items after an order has been processed.
