DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreen Co. has added two executives to its pharmacy, health and wellness division’s leadership team.

Walgreen Co. has added two executives to its pharmacy, health and wellness division’s leadership team.

Dr. Jeffrey Kang will join the company on October 31 as senior vice president of health and wellness services and solutions, reporting to both president and chief executive officer Greg Wasson and president of pharmacy, health and wellness Kermit Crawford.

Also, Mike Ellis has joined Walgreens as vice president of specialty pharmacy and infusion, reporting to Crawford.

"To advance community pharmacy and our role in the integration and cost-effective delivery of health care, we are continuing to strengthen the talent and leadership of our pharmacy, health and wellness organization," Crawford says.

Kang comes to Walgreens after a long and diverse career in health care that has included stints as a practicing physician, and positions in the government and in the private sector.

"He has the breadth of experience and strategic insight to lead our health and wellness businesses, building a dynamic organization that helps us meet customers’ needs for access to quality, affordable health care," Crawford says.

Kang, 55, most recently served as chief medical officer at CIGNA, a health insurance and health services company. Before that he was chief clinical officer at the Health Care Financing Administration (now Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). He also was chief medical officer for the Office of Managed Care from 1995 to 1998.

Kang began his career as the executive director of the Urban Medical Group, a nonprofit, private group practice in Boston.

As Walgreens’ new vice president of specialty pharmacy and infusion, Ellis will bring important strategic oversight to those business units, Crawford says.

"His leadership will be an important part of our opportunity to play a significant role as a provider in these growing pharmaceutical segments," Crawford says.

Before joining Walgreens, Ellis, 53, managed private investments for companies in health care and other industries. Prior to that, he was senior vice president of specialty trade relations and contracting and pharmaceutical services for CVS Caremark. He has more than 28 years of experience in the specialty pharmacy and infusion services industries.
