Minimum order requirement for free shipping dropped

Walmart adds benefit to Walmart+

BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Walmart is removing the $35 minimum on online purchases eligible for free shipping to members of its Walmart+ subscription service.

The retailer introduced Walmart+ last summer as a subscription service priced at $98 a year and promising same-day delivery of groceries and general merchandise, as well as perks such as discounts on gasoline.

In eliminating the purchase minimum for free shipping, Walmart is making the service a more formidable alternative to Amazon Prime, which carries an annual price tag of $119 and includes free two-day grocery delivery, access to Prime Video content, discounts at Whole Foods stores and other benefits.

Elimination of the shipping minimum takes effect on Thursday, Walmart said in a statement released today. Walmart+ members will receive free next-day and two-day shipping on items shipped by Walmart, regardless basket size, though the new feature will not apply to grocery orders delivered from brick-and-mortar stores.

“It feels like a life hack is needed now more than ever, and Walmart+ is here to help,” said Janey Whiteside, Walmart’s chief customer officer. “No other membership allows customers across the country to get everything from gingerbread cookies and eggnog to holiday decorations and toys delivered for free as soon as the same day. Walmart+ is designed to make life easier – giving customers an option to not have to sacrifice on cost or convenience.”

Walmart is also increasing the number of locations where members can access their fuel savings with the addition of fuel stations at more than 5,000 Sam’s Club warehouse outlets. Subscribers also can access fuel discounts at more than 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA and Murphy Express fuel stations.

Walmart+ subscribers also can use Scan and Go in stores, which lets customers shop and check out with their phone.

“Customers have been clear – they want this benefit,” said Whiteside. “Being able to toss an item into your cart, regardless the total, and check out right away lets them knock little things off their to-do list in no time.”

Walmart last month reported third-quarter financial results that included a 79% year-on-year increase in ecommerce sales as consumers adjust to the realities of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re convinced that most of the behavior change will persist beyond the pandemic and that our combination of strong stores and emerging digital capabilities will be a winning formula,” Doug McMillon, Walmart’s president and chief executive officer, told investors on an earnings call. “Customers will want to be served in a variety of ways and we’re positioned to save them money, provide the variety of product choices they’re looking for, and deliver the experience they choose in the moment.”
