BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Walmart is bringing together experts in nutrition, mental health and cardiac care for a three-day wellness event, being staged online this year in lieu of the in-store health fairs it typically offers.

The free event, dubbed Walmart Wellness Live, begins August 28 and will feature recording artist Patti LaBelle, cardiologist Juan Rivera and psychiatrist Christine Crawford.

The three-day event will feature insight from singer Patti LaBelle, cardiologist Dr. Juan Rivera and psychiatry expert Dr. Christine Crawford.

“We are worried about a secondary health crisis, as many people put off routine medical care while they social distance during the pandemic. But there are simple, preventive measures that can help manage many of these health issues,” says Tom Van Gilder, Walmart’s chief medical officer. “Our goal is to empower every American to take small steps to maximize their health from home, whether it’s a simple ingredient swap, new exercise or tools to understand how to focus on health as a family.”

Walmart says it has provided more than 4.4 million free health screenings since it introduced its quarterly Walmart Wellness days, in 2014. The company provides screenings as well as immunizations at more than 4,700 in-store pharmacies in the United States, but demand for these services is down this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Walmart Wellness Live can be accessed at an online portal Walmart has set up for the event, which the company notes is designed to showcase simple but effective steps people can take to improve their nutritional, mental health and heart health. Highlights include:

  • Friday, August 28 – Nutritional Health: LaBelle will share her personal journey with diabetes, with an emphasis on how to manage symptoms through diet and exercise. This session should help participants understand diabetes issues, whether they are at risk or living with type 2 diabetes.
  • Saturday, August 29 – Heart Health: Rivera, the chief medical correspondent for Univision, will divulge resources on how customers can lower their blood pressure and make other meaningful health changes through diet and exercise.
  • Sunday, August 30 – Mental HeaSlth: Crawford, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Boston University School of Medicine, will discuss how to talk to family members about mental health and to understand, manage and treat anxiety.
