After closing 30 underperforming outlets this summer, Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. has begun opening remodeled stores in a handful of markets.

In late September, for example, the supermarket company took the wraps off a multimillion-dollar, 9,000-square-foot expansion and remodel of a store in Mobile, Ala.

The revamped unit offers what executives call a “dramatically enhanced shopping experience featuring many new amenities,” including an outdoor farmers’ market, expanded meat, seafood and wine departments and dedicated area offering free Wi-Fi access and complimentary coffee.

“This store exemplifies our fresh and local strategy and goes to the heart of what consumers have told us is important to them,” Winn-Dixie western regional vice president Joey Medina says.

A week later, the company debuted a revamped unit in South Miami, Fla., with many of the same features as the Mobile store.

Besides upgraded departments and expanded features, the stores offer more local products and a wide variety of private label items.
