“We are pleased to welcome Rick to our board of directors,” Kellogg chairman and chief executive officer John Bryant said in a statement. “Rick’s tremendous retail experience from his time with Dollar General and others, coupled with his incredible depth and breadth of knowledge leading retailers across multiple channels, will be of great benefit to our company.”

Kellogg noted that Dreiling brings more than 40 years of retail industry experience to the board, spanning the consumer discount, drug store and grocery sectors. He stepped down as Dollar General chairman in late January, after serving in the role since December 2008, and had retired as the company’s CEO at the end of May 2015.

Before joining Dollar General, Dreiling served as CEO of Duane Reade Holdings and as chief operating officer at Longs Drug Stores. Prior to that he held a variety of roles in a 34-year tenure at Safeway, including marketing, manufacturing, distribution, merchandising and retail operations.

Besides his membership on the Kellogg board of directors, Dreiling serves on the boards of Lowe’s Cos., Aramark and PulteGroup Inc.
