GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer Inc. continues to expand in the Midwest, with store openings earlier this month in Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

The new supercenters include Meijer’s 12th in Indianapolis — a 192,000-square-foot outlet that the company opened on June 7 in the city’s North Kessler neighborhood.

“We always work hard to find locations that will benefit from our offerings, so we are proud to provide our new neighbors in Indianapolis with our great combination of selection and quality at lower prices,” chief executive officer Hank Meijer said. “We’re very excited to offer a one-stop shopping experience and do our part to help this neighborhood continue to grow and thrive.”

Meijer has invested nearly $200 million in new stores and remodeling projects in Indianapolis since 2005, according to the company.

Another June 7 store opening took place in Sussex, Wis., where Meijer also added a 192,000-square-foot supercenter. Meijer made its debut in Wisconsin last year, opening supercenters in Grafton, Kenosha, Wauwatosa and Oak Creek.

The new Sussex location is Meijer’s fifth Wisconsin supercenter, and the company plans to open a sixth, in Waukesha, later this summer. Meijer has made a major commitment to growth in the state of Wisconsin and plans to open two or three additional stores per year through 2020, including potential locations in the Green Bay, Fox Valley, Greenfield, Manitowoc and Sheboygan areas in the next several years.

“It has been a great privilege to demonstrate the Meijer difference to customers in Wisconsin during this past year,” Meijer president Rick Keyes said at the Sussex store opening. “So, we are truly pleased to open this new store, which will provide Sussex and its surrounding communities with our combination of selection and quality at low prices.”

On June 2 Meijer opened a Sturgis, Mich., supercenter. Meijer plans to add a total of nine supercenters this year, as part of an investment of more than $400 million in new and remodeled stores.

All three of the supercenters Meijer opened earlier this month were built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, and feature the retailer’s traditional grocery and merchandise, a garden center, and a 24-hour gas station.

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer operates 227 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.
