CARLISLE, Pa. – The GIANT Co. said Thursday it intends to hire 3,000 people to help handle a surge of shoppers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The company also said it is bringing more personalization to its website and mobile app.

“At the GIANT Co., our purpose is to connect families for a better future, and our mission is more vital now than ever before,” said Matthew Lutcavage, vice president of human resources. “We’re committed to serving our communities and customers during this extraordinary time while helping our neighbors who are looking for work.”

The company is looking to fill a host of in-store, fulfillment center and delivery driver positions. Hitting its hiring target would increase GIANT’s workforce by close to 10%.

Over the past month, GIANT has added about 4,000 temporary and part-time workers across its GIANT, MARTIN’S, GIANT Direct, MARTIN’S Direct and GIANT Heirloom Market banners.

“Over the past two months, our incredible in-store and e-commerce team members have worked tirelessly to serve families, but the demand for online grocery keeps growing stronger,” Lutcavage explained.

The tech enhancements should also help the company meet the increased demand, particularly an upgrade of its GIANT Direct platform that will boost order capacity and add time slots.

GIANT Direct offers contactless pickup service at more than 130 GIANT and MARTIN’S stores. Customers across 90% of the company’s footprint have access to the company’s online grocery ordering and delivery services. GIANT has nearly 190 stores, 132 pharmacies, 105 fuel stations and 125 curbside pickup locales in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. It delivers groceries to customers living in hundreds of ZIP codes across its footprint.

Tech enhancements that upgrade its website and increase online order capacity are being rolled out this week. GIANT said these enhancements include product recommendations, a bolder interface, and a robust search and filter capability that connects users to the Guiding Stars nutrition guidance program.
