The company has announced that approximately 2,300 workers, including hourly employees and salaried assistant managers, will be let go. That amounts to almost 2% of Sam’s Club’s 116,000 employees, or an average of about four employees per club.

A Sam’s Club spokesman told the New York Times the cuts are an effort to balance resources. "We realized we had pretty much the same club structure whether a club had $50 million in revenue or $100 million in revenue," he said.

Affected employees unable to find other jobs within Walmart in 60 days will be eligible for severance.

Other retailers that have announced job cuts recently include Target Corp., J.C. Penney Co. and Macy’s Inc.
