SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion announced it would start accepting mobile payments at its nearly 1,100 grocery stores. The retailer said customers using Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay could pay for purchases using their mobile devices. The technology helps Food Lion make customers’ shopping experiences quick and easy, the company said in a statement last month.

“We’re excited to introduce mobile payment options for our customers at local Food Lion stores,” said senior vice president of retail operations Greg Finchum. “Customers asked us to make grocery shopping easier and more convenient, and this new payment process is another way we are helping our customers speed through the checkout line.”

Mobile pay isn’t the only process being streamlined at Food Lion’s check-out counter, the company said. It recently completed its chip-and-PIN rollout, enabling all of its stores to accept chip-and-PIN cards, offering customers yet another form of secure, enhanced payment.

Food Lion also noted that it is continuing to integrate mobile and digital technologies for the benefit of customers. Recent initiatives include a pilot with Instacart for grocery delivery in the Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C., markets. The company also rolled out a digital MVP Coupon Hub where customers can access load-to-card coupons, and it is offering customers a customized grocery shopping experience from the moment they log in to its online savings center.
