Safeway Inc. is joining the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, a network of companies working to improve Americans’ health and well-being.

"We are very excited about the USDA partnership, since it underscores our commitment to health and wellness and provides a natural extension to the work we’re already doing to help Americans make informed, healthier choices when shopping in our stores and in their daily lives," says Safeway chairman, president and chief executive officer Steve Burd.

Safeway will be the largest grocery chain to become a National Strategic Partner in the program’s Nutrition Communicators Network, the company notes, adding that the chain’s efforts will build on the steps it is already taking in its stores. These include implementing a shelf tag system called SimpleNutrition to help shoppers find healthier food and beverage choices, and its offering of more than 200 SKUs in its Eating Right line of food products.
