NEW YORK — Retailers are boosting their staffing levels in preparation for the holiday season, with both Target Corp. and Walmart making major announcements.

Target said it is providing 5 million more hours to current store team members this holiday shopping season, resulting in over $75 million more in pay for its existing team. Through a new mobile scheduling app, the retailer said it will also provide all team members the opportunity to choose or swap shifts that align with their schedules.

Meanwhile, Walmart said it is planning to hire approximately 150,000 new U.S. store associates, most of them permanent, full-time positions across the country.

“This will ensure we’re ready to help customers shop however they want, whether they’re in a store, using curbside pickup or shopping online,” Walmart said in a statement.

“We’re always looking to add great talent to our incredible team of dedicated associates — the everyday heroes who have been a constant force for good in their communities amidst the uncertainty of the past year. Before we know it, millions of customers will count on our team to help find those great gifts and holiday meals, and we’ll be ready.

“Many of our store associates like to pick up extra hours over the holiday season, and we’ll continue to offer those opportunities. We’ve also invested in our associates by making three major wage increases over the past year, offering more full-time roles and paying 100% of their college tuition and books through Live Better U,” Walmart added.

In addition to the 150,000 new associates in stores, Walmart said it plans to hire 20,000 associates in its supply chain facilities to permanent roles.

In its stores, Target said it will focus on flexibility, keeping guests and team members safe and offering convenient same-day services by increasing the number of store teams supporting its drive up and order pickup services. The retailer said it has tripled the number of its store fulfillment expert roles over the last two years.

Throughout the holiday season, Target said it will continue to have front-of-store team members focused on safety and cleaning precautions. Target also plans to hire 100,000 seasonal team members at its stores across the country to supplement its current team, and the retailer said many of them will have the opportunity to continue working for Target following the holiday season.
