MINNEAPOLIS — Target Corp. has confirmed the stores it plans to open in Canada next year.

Target Corp. has confirmed the stores it plans to open in Canada next year.

The company says it will open 125 stores in all 10 provinces. The openings, which will begin in the spring, will be scattered throughout the year. "Construction has already begun on our first set of stores, and we are excited to see the transformation as the Target brand comes to life in Canada," said Tony Fisher, president of Target Canada. "We have stores spanning from coast to coast, and we can’t wait to open our doors in Canada and deliver on our ‘Expect More. Pay Less.’ brand promise."

The company says it plans to open the most stores (50) in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province.

In addition, 25 stores will be opened in Quebec, 18 will debut in British Columbia and 15 will open in Alberta. Nova Scotia and Manitoba will get four stores apiece, with three units opening in New Brunswick, two in Newfoundland and a single store debuting on Prince Edward Island.

The Target stores, all but two of which are on sites the company acquired as part of its $1.83 billion deal with Hudson’s Bay Co. last year for the leases to 220 Zellers Inc. outlets, will be closed for six to nine months so the company can bring what it calls “the true Target brand experience” to Canada.

Target says it will invest more than $10 million into each new store. Executives say they expect to announce the locations of stores that will open in 2014 and beyond later this year.
