Target Corp. has partnered with Instacart to offer a delivery service pilot program here.

Residents in some Minneapolis neighborhoods can now buy groceries online from Target and receive their orders at home in as little as an hour, according to the retailer.

Target says the partnership is the latest example of Target’s increasing efforts to deliver goods to guests quickly. It comes on the heels of Target's offering store pickup for online orders and expanding its “ship from store” program, under which stores fulfill and ship online orders, typically in two to three days.

“Our goal is to make grocery shopping easier and more convenient,” says Jason Goldberger, president of Target.com and Mobile. “Our team is constantly listening to guests’ needs and looking for new ways to help them shop Target wherever, whenever and however they want. Instacart is a leading player in this space and we look forward to seeing how guests in the Minneapolis area respond to the service.”

In addition to groceries, the collaboration will allow area residents to buy selected Target household, health and beauty, and pet items, and such baby products as diapers and formula.

Currently the Instacart-Target partnership is only in parts of Minneapolis, but Target says the companies are exploring plans to expand into additional areas and markets.

"Instacart and Target share a deep commitment to customer satisfaction and convenient shopping," said Instacart founder and chief executive officer Apoorva Mehta. "As one of our most requested retailers, we are very excited to offer our customers the opportunity to shop at this nationally beloved store."

Instacart’s move into Minneapolis, its 18th major market, means that customers in many parts of the city can get products delivered from the company’s other retail partners, including Whole Foods Market Inc., Costco Wholesale Corp. (with no membership needed) and Petco stores, as well as new partners Cub Foods, Wedge Community Co-op and Lakewinds Food Co-op.
