BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart is underlining its commitments to omnichannel retailing and to American health care with a new Supercenter design and expansion plans for its Walmart Health concept.

The sleek new Supercenter design, which has been tested in a few locations, will be rolled out to more stores this fall and will be in nearly 1,000 stores by next fiscal year (fiscal 2022), according to Janey Whiteside, executive vice president and chief customer officer. The new concept features a layout that spotlights products and a bold new approach to signage that is geared in part to customers navigating the store digitally with the Walmart app.

“We were inspired by airport way-finding systems as best-in-class examples of how to direct large groups of people,” Whiteside explained in a blog post. “We developed simple yet thoughtful designs to replicate these navigation efficiencies, which will help us move customers through the store more quickly. We also optimized product layout, bringing greater visibility to key items throughout the store, including dedicated in-store sections for electronics, toys, baby products and more.”

The redesigned stores include self-checkout kiosks and contactless payment solutions, including Walmart Pay, while selected locations will also offer Scan & Go, an app developed within Sam’s Club, to help customers manage their checkout.

Walmart has also marked the first anniversary of the opening of its initial Walmart Health outlet by unveiling further expansion plans for the concept. The company recently opened a fifth location in Georgia, raising its total to six, and it plans to open seven more sites in Georgia by the end of this fiscal year next January. An additional seven clinics are scheduled to debut in the Jacksonville, Fla., market in 2021.

The company has also initiated discussions in the Orlando and Tampa, Fla., markets, according to a blog post by Lori Flees, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Walmart U.S. Health & Wellness.
